AUSTIN, George, (''Shorty""), 47, of Salem, died Sunday, July 7, 1996, in Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was a native of New Castle. He was employed with General Electric Company for the past 25 years, where he worked as a welder in their sheet metal department. He was preceded in death by his mother, Addie C. Austin. Survivors include his wife, Diane F. Austin; a son, Steven W. Austin of New Castle; a daughter and son-in-law, Julie A. and Tony Croft of Roanoke; his father, Frank W. Austin Sr. of New Castle, and a brother, Frank W. Austin Jr. of New Castle. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Chapel in Salem, with the Rev. Roy Rogers and the Rev. Ernie Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Huffman Memorial Cemetery in New Castle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Rescue Squad
