Norma E. Bates (Bowen)

1927 ~ 2013

Our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Norma, age 86, quietly left us Wednesday, January 16, 2013 and joyfully burst beyond the veil into heaven and into the loving arms of her husband, Hyrum, parents, a brother and sisters, extended family and friends.

Norma was born January 2, 1927 to Elmer Bartlett and Mary C. Carver Bartlett in Pocatello, Idaho. She attended Horace Mann Jr. High, and graduated from South High School in SLC. She married Max Irving Eskelson (divorced) and had her daughter, Judy. Later she married her eternal love, Hyrum D. Bates on August 16, 1952 and had her son, John. The family was sealed together forever in the Salt Lake Temple, May 15, 1959. Hy passed away January 30, 1997. In 1999 she married Jay E. Bowen (Deceased).

She was preceded in death by: her husbands; parents; brother, Bob Bartlett (Helen); sisters, Marian Christensen (Donald) and Evelyn Jones (Jack); and a great-grandchild (Matthew and Ranae's). She is survived by her brother, Roger Bartlett; numerous nieces and nephews; son, John A. Bates; daughter, Judy West; grandchildren, Mark (Karen) Bates; Matthew (Ranae) Bates, Ronald (Marcele) Bates, Randy (Brittnee) Bates, Phillip (Nichelle) Bates, Sharon (Travis) Hanson, Amy Reich, Michael (Alicia) West, Jeffrey (Trista) West and Eric (Abby) West; and 24 great-grandchildren.

We love our mother and grandmother and are thankful for her life, her influence and her endurance. We are grateful she is now able to think clearly, walk and be her beautiful self again. She worked for Industrial Supply Co. many years. She focused her love on her children and grandchildren. She loved camping and fishing at Moon Lake with Hy, and taking road trips everywhere, even stopping at LDS temples along the way. She loved family get-togethers, lots of ice cream and laughing. Even though Parkinsons disease and dementia kept her from communicating with us, through the tender mercies of Heavenly Father, she recognized our jokes and loved to laugh with us to the end.

Norma was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who served willingly in numerous auxiliary leadership positions as well as an ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple. She was an incredible Primary and youth Sunday school teacher. It's her voice we hear teaching us when we again read the scripture stories.

We wish to thank Rheta Higley, her past Stake Relief Society counselor and good friend, for her loving attention to our mother, also Hearts for Hospice staff and nurses. We thank the incredible loving staff and nurses at Rocky Mountain Care ~ Murray (formerly Murray Care) for making a real home and giving daily comforting care for our mother the last 4 years.

Her funeral will be held in the chapel of Memorial Mortuary ~ Murray, 5850 South 900 East on Tuesday, January 22nd at 11 a.m. A viewing will be held the evening of Monday, January 21st, from 6 to 8 p.m. and also1 hour prior to the funeral services.
