Helen was the daughter of Frank Thomas Roche and Catherine (Cain) Roche, and was raised in Bloomfield CT. She was a 1918 graduate of Hartford Public High School, and had worked as a secretary at the Travelers Insurance Co. in Hartford for nine years prior to her marriage.

Helen married Lyman Kimbel Bridgman on June 21, 1927, and they lived in Northampton, Mass., for the rest of their lives (for almost forty years in the house at 105 Pine Street in the Florence section of Northampton).

Helen worked from 1946 to 1965 as a secretary at Smith College, first in the Registrar's Office and then in the office of the class deans. She was a member of the Annunciation Church in Florence for more than 50 years, and had served as a member of the Catholic Women's Council of Northampton at one time. She was active in the Northampton Women's Club, and served as its president from 1972 to 1974 and from 1978 to 1979. She was a past member of The Cooley Dickinson Hospital Auxiliary, the Florence Civic and Business Association, and the former Westhampton Indian Summer Club. She had been a Girl Scout leader in Florence in the 1930s.

Helen and Lyman had two sons (and one daughter who died in infancy).
