MARY DONALDSON HUTTON
Of course I did not know this lady personally only stories about her. My Grandmother Maud Hutton MacLean always said she was a "stout or fleshy" woman around 200 plus pounds and about 5 ft 6 tall. She walked with a heavy gait. When she stayed at the W O Hutton house she always had a particular bedroom upstairs. And you always were forwarned that she was coming downstairs because you could hear the plop plop of her footsteps on the carpeted steps.
One early evening a group of the Hutton Brothers and I suppose a few friends were sitting around the kitchen table playing cards. All of a sudden plop plop their Mother was coming downstairs. Well playing cards must have been a no no in her books because one of the brothers quickly stuffed the pack of cards into his pocket and when Grandma appeared in the kitchen all she saw was a group of men sitting around the table looking sheepishly at each other and not a cup. saucer or bit of food on the table! What did she think? I bet she was a good guesser.
Another story Aunt Mary Christina told was that Grandma Hutton had a very rough crossing on the long journey over the Atlantic and she was deathly afraid of water. As a result. Aunt Mary said when she bathed she would only have the water so high in her bathtub just enough get the job done.
My own Mother said "I don't think Grandma likes me... She always brings treats for
Ernie and Etta but little for me..." Maybe just a child's perspective or perhaps being the eldest of the family Grandma expected her to be a little more mature and not needing to be treated like her younger sibblings...
I just loved visiting Ireland and I am sure Mary Donaldson Hutton could have told some pretty entertaining stories about her childhood and up bringing. And what a frightening adventure to travel to Canada back in those days. It was a foreign land with strange ways. I am sure this woman had great spirit and strength as it is evident in many of her decendents.
