Born in Bourg-Louis, Portneuf, Québec, to Alexander Johnstone and Eliza Jane Garvin who were married at St. Bartholomew's Church of England in 1854.
Her parents may have died early since the only other mention of Annie Johnston as a child is as a resident of a Women and Children's Home in Lower Canada.
On 30 November 1882 Annie married tinsmith David Laird at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Montreal where they raised seven daughters and their youngest, a son.
