Between high school and college, Jack served his country during World War II. He was a soldier in the Army, and served his active duty in the Philippines. During this time, Jack married the love of his life, Margaret Huebner. They married at a very young age so she could move with him to Chicago when he entered the Army, much to the chagrin of their parents. Their marriage lasted 70 happy years until Margaret's death in 2012.
John attended the University of Detroit on the GI Bill. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. This would lead John to work as an engineer and in management at several different companies. His first job out of college was with Micromatic, then Budd Co., Keanery & Trecker, and Excelo. John was most proud of his role as President for IMPCO. He especially enjoyed his years while running that organization.
John was a wonderful man, and always aspired to keep his body and mind engaged with something whether it was a physical activity or telling one of his famous stories. He loved to have fun and share a good laugh. He was a great father and grandfather, and loved spending as much time as possible with his family. Photography and painting were two of Jack's hobbies, and he also played a bit of golf and liked cooking. Walking was another of his favorite activities, and he even walked two miles on his 90th birthday. John and Margaret travelled the world with the Nomads, and he enjoyed all of those vacations.
Jack's retirement was not a time of rest for him as he dedicated his life to serving his church and serving others. He was very active at the Manresa Retreat Center in Bloomfield Hills, and was a member of their Serra Club. He was the driving force in rebuilding their new Stations of the Cross. John's service also included being a Eucharistic minister at Beaumont Hospital for 25 years, and a wider nursing home ministry. He volunteered at Arden Court, Evergreen Nursing Home, and Cambridge South. John would lead prayer services and visit with the residents, among other activities. His devotion to helping others helped him remain sharp mentally and physically during the later years of his life.
Jack was the beloved husband of the late Margaret for 70 years. Cherished father of John M. (Marcia), Rose Stemmermann (Don), Tom (Terri) and Pat Wright (Fred). Devoted "Poppo" of 10 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
