Injuries Fatal in one-car Accident

Betsy L Heckaman, 30, 651 S. Locke St., Nappanee, was killed Thursday afternoon, September 7, of injuries suffered when her car hit a telephone pole and a tree on Third Road, Bremen. According to police reports, Heckaman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, by Marshall County Coroner Dean Byers, was traveling east on Third Road, at approximately 4:45 pm, when she lost control of her 1994 Ford Thunderbird. The car left the road, striking the telephone pole and breaking it off. It then struck a large tree. Emergency crews from Lake of the Woods First Responders and Fire Department, Union North Fire and EMS Departments, and Indiana State Police responded at the scene.

Betsy L Heckaman was born November 13. 1964, in South Bend, the daughter of Stan and Rita (Nettrour) Thomas. She was a 1983 graduate of North Wood High School, and had been employed in the office at Tiara Vans, Nappanee.

She married Michael Heckaman, October 7, 1989, in Nappanee, and he survives. Also surviving are two sons: Timothy James Stankovich, and Travis Heckaman, at home; a daughter, Tonya Stankovich, at home; a sister, Mrs Tom (Brenda) Hawkins. Nappanee; her parents, and grandmothers: Katherine Clay, Nappanee. and Fredonna Thomas, Elkhart.

The Rev Marvin Engbrecht, associate pastor at the Nappanee Missionary Church, conducted services Monday morning, at Thompson & Yoder Funeral Home, with burial at Bremen Cemetery.
