Well Known Farmer Dies At Age of 78; Was For Many Years A Buyer Of Stock In This Community.
Jacob Heckaman, seventy-eight years old, one of the most prominent farmers in Marshall county and for many years a livestock dealer in Bremen, died at the family home six miles southeast of Bremen Tuesday morning at 4 :30 o'clock. He had been ill four weeks with paralysis. Funeral services will be held this afternoon, leaving the home at one o'clock for Salem Evangelical church. Rev C E Geist will officiate and burial will be in the Bremen cemetery.
Jacob Heckaman was the son Jacob and Elizabeth (Shearer) Heckaman and was born on the old Heckaman farm near Bremen Nov 1852, and spent his entire life in that neighborhood.
On May 13, 1877, he was united in marriage with Matilda E Becknell and they became the parents of one of the largest families in the county. Fourteen children were born to them, of whom thirteen survive with their widowed mother. One son died in infancy.
The surviving sons are Samuel G, James Howard, Stephen A, Schuyler G, Walter R, ArthurM, and William E Heckaman, all of this community except Schuyler, who lives at Akron, Ind. The six daughters are Mrs R Hepler, Mrs Frank Deisch, Mrs Floyd Huff, Miss Goldia E Heckaman and Mrs Jasper Wilson of Bremen and Mrs Charles Edler of Etna Green. There are forty-six children and fifteen great grandchildren.
Mr. Heckaman was one of a family of seven brothers and three sisters, all of whom have preceded him death except one brother, Adam Heckaman, who lives at Bourbon.
Besides his farming interests, which made him one of the large land owners of the county, Mr Heckaman conducted a livestock business in Bremen for more than thirty-five years and became widely known in this community.
