Robert was a Civil War soldier enlisted in January 1862 as a private in Co. D, 14th Maine Infantry. His widow's pension provided a testimony from Capt. William D. Chase of the 14th Maine, that Robert contracted Typhoid fever in April 1862 at Ship Island, Mississippi. The regiment moved to New Orleans where his Captain tried to obtain a discharge for him for several months. Finally he was discharged on 16 October 1862, but still had to wait almost 3 weeks for transportation home. His Captain stated that Robert knew he would not live long without medical aid. Finally on October 27, 1862, he was "helped" aboard a ship "Cahawba" bound for New York. The testimony of Oliver Brown of Foxcroft, Maine who was on board with Robert stated that Robert died during the night of October 28, 1862 and the next day was sewn up in a blanket and buried at sea.
