The second of three children, Selma was born March 2, 1939 in Plainview, Arkansas to Ada Jeanette (Criswell) and Donald Woodrow Whitaker. She attended Seymour High School and later went on to earn a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She put her training to good use as an in-home caregiver to patients requiring full-time attention. During her career, she lived in Olney, IL., Lakeland, FL., Rogersville, MO, and Blue Springs, MO where she retired in 2002. She was a devoted Christian, having received the gift of salvation as a young woman. She was an avid student of the Bible and left many hand-written notes about her studies. She loved to cook and bake and had a great sense of design when decorating a room. She loved furniture and had a particular affinity for chairs of all kinds. Small in physical stature, Selma took great care in her appearance with considerable attention to detail and proper fashion.

As her health continued to deteriorate, she relocated once more to Bossier City, LA to be near her sister, Karen. Ultimately, left with no other options she agreed to another open heart surgery from which she did not awaken. With her son Donnie at her bedside, she went to be with the Lord Jesus, whom she loved, at 3:20 AM, Nov. 15, 2012.
