WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Leona McKenzie Mueller, 92, formerly of Marenisco, died peacefully Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, in Wakefield.

She was born on April 13, 1920, in Ewen, the daughter of Joseph and Celia Lanctoe. Her family moved to Marenisco when Leona was 12, and she graduated with the Marenisco High School class of 1938.

Shortly after, she began her career with the United States Postal Service, first as a clerk for the Marenisco Post Office and later, in the early 1970s, as its postmaster. She enjoyed 40 years of dedicated service to the people of Marenisco and Lake Gogebic before retiring in 1980.

On Oct. 1, 1949, Leona married Donald M. McKenzie at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Marenisco. They were blessed with 30 years of marriage and raised their two children, Jim and Judi, in Marenisco before he passed away in 1980.

She married Edward R. Mueller at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Mercer after her retirement and they made their home on Lake Gogebic. Leona was actively involved with the Lake Gogebic Fireflies and various hobbies, including golf and biking. She and Ed were wonderful hosts to their children, grandchildren and numerous friends and family. Many wonderful hours were spent on their pontoon on Lake Gogebic. They traveled extensively during their 17 years together.

Leona moved to her new home in Bessemer Township next to her son's family after Ed's death in October 1997. She experienced the trip of a lifetime to eight European countries with her daughter and granddaughter Alli in 2000. Leona became a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. She spent her last years as a resident of the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield.

She is survived by her son, James (Janet) McKenzie, and daughter, Judith (Jerry) Whitley Yatchak, both of Ironwood; eight grandchildren, Laura (Kevin) Everson, Carla (Peter) Murray, Ryan (Stacy) Whitley, Anna (Thomas) Talaska, Patricia (Joshua) Kodis, Allison (Nick Lake) Whitley, Sandra (Jason) Holmes and Stephen McKenzie; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, John Sawaski and Donald Reid; sisters-in-law, Jean McKenzie and Marilyn McKenzie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husbands, Leona was preceded in death by her brothers, Arthur and Francis Lanctoe; sisters, Anita Reid and Irene Sawaski; sisters-in-law, Bernice and Kay Lanctoe; brothers-in-law, Jack and Richard W. McKenzie; and her son-in-law, Derald L. Whitley.

Rite of Committal will take place next to her husband, Donald, in Marenisco Cemetery.
