Son of Jesse G Dollar and Mary Chambers.

John Wesley Dollar was born in Fulton County, Illinois in 1838. His parents were Jesse G. Dollar and Mary Chambers. His paternal grandfather, William Dollar, was a soldier of the Revolutionary War from Virginia. John's father moved the family from Illinois to Polk County, Missouri about 1840. John's father was a farmer. John Wesley was one of 5 children. War with Mexico came in 1846 and ended in 1848. The Bear Flag Republic of California was formally annexed as a territory of the United States by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, in February, 1848, and became a state in 1850.
Gold was discovered in Jan of 1848 at Sutter's Mill in California and a gold rush ensued.

By the mid 1850s two of Jesse Dollar's sons, John Wesley and William Reddon, left Missouri and traveled across the plains west to northwestern California.
John Wesley and his brother William crossed the plains to California by wagon train and by 1860 they were living in the northern part of the state in Mendocino Township of Sonoma County.
The next year news of war came to California. The news arrived by pony express 12 days after the firing on Ft. Sumter in April of 1861,
John's family that were involved with the war that ensued was his brother Enoch who was in the Union Cavalry back in Missouri.
John Wesley was married to Alice Louella Shields in 1872. He worked as a lumberman.
By 1880 John was living in Santa Cruz County, California. John's older brother, William R. Dollar, was living with John and his family in 1880. John's younger brother, Samuel, had also moved to Santa Cruz County in about 1877 and was living near to John and his brother William. All three of them were lumberman. John moved his family to Sonoma County and continued to live there with his family until his death.
In 1905 his family suffered tragedy when the house that they were all living in caught fire. Two of his sons were critically burned and died from their injuries. His brother William was also injured in the fire. His two sons, Jackson and Henry died within days of the fire. His brother WIliam died within a few weeks. All of his other family survived without injury. John continued to live in Sonoma County with his family until his death in 1915.
He died on the 28th of November 1915.

John and Alice had the following children: William Berlin, Sarah Luella, Samuel Enoch, Mary Elizabeth, Jackson Temple, Henry, Ernest Arthur, Joseph Basel, Alice Ventura, Daisy Belle, and Hazel Dell.
