Elizabeth "Scottie" Williams longtime Newton County resident. Caldwell & Cowan: Elizabeth "Scottie" Williams, 34, of Mansfield, died suddenly in an automobile accident on Nov. 20. She was born on Aug. 21, 1963 in Fulton County. She was the daughter of the late June Winkler LaMacchio. She had been a resident of Newton County for the past 25 years. She is survived by her brother Marcus Allen LaMacchio of Newborn. Funeral services for Williams will be held on Nov. 29 in the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan. Rev. Jack McBride will officiate. May 28, 1985. My dear children, I am your mother. I was born Betty June Winkler, on June 16, 1940. I want to tell ya'll about myself, as I remember it. In 1940 it was the tail end of the great depression. It was a very bad time. There was little or no work. People were jobless, hungry, homeless. But our family survived. We are survivors. Things may get bad for us but we pull thru. Our family let me tell you a little about them. My Mama, was born Minnie Elizabeth Hammond, August 25, 1919, in Trion, Ga.. Her parents were Ruby Coralee Cantreel and Wiley Monroe Hammond. My Daddy was born Lee Roy Winkler, March 20, 1919. His parents were Lillie Mae Young and Cicro Allan Winkler. Daddy was born in Powder Springs Ga.. Well when I was born the family was living in a neighborhood that is now the down town expressway connector. The houses were big old turn of the centery houses. My first memory was of an upstairs window, I was in my crib and watching the limbs of a tree top. I remember crying and Mama picking me up. I remember a chinelle house coat, it felt good to my face. Later the house we lived in was on Georgia Ave. about where the South expressway is. Mama and Daddy had an upstairs apt. in the house. That was owned by a Mr. & Mrs. Davis. I don't remember a whole lot about living there, but I do remember a huge fig tree in the backyard. I would go out and sit in that fig tree. It was all green and cool. I remember Mrs. Davis made pickled peaches and the toilet had a wooden box up on the wall and you had to pull a chain hanging out of that box to flush. The next house we lived in was on the corner of Hood Street and Rawson Street. That house was in area between Atlanta Stadium and Whitehall St.. It was a big one story house. The front porch went all the way across the front of the house. There was a long hall, from the front porch to the back porch. We lived in three rooms, on one side of the house. A family of three lived in the front room. On our side , Uncle Hoyal & Aunt Ruth lived in the front room on the other side, and Mama Ruby and Grandaddy Frank lived in the other two rooms. We were happy in that house. I remember there was always some one to hug or help you if you fell or got a splinter, by this time World War two was going on. Daddy drove a truck for the Red Ball express. Between Atlanta and New Oreleans. Then as the war went on , the government began drafting men with children., by that time I had a little sister, Judy Arlette Winkler. Judy was born Sept. 10, 1942. She was such a tiny little baby. I remember her soft little hair tickling my face when Mama let me kiss her. I don't remember this but the family tells me that the first time I saw my sister ,I bit her. But I got a spanking and didn't do that again. So Daddy was drafted into the army. He was in Gen. George Patton's army and was sent to France. D-day the beginning of the end of the war. Daddy was wounded. He was in a hospital in Oklahoma, until he was well and discharged. He would come home on furloug, those were happy times, when Daddy came home. While Daddy was in the army Mama worked at a place where Mounds candy bars were made, and she was able to bring home candy bars. Which was nice, because sugar, chocolate & all kinds of stuff like that was rationed. While Mama worked Granmama Winkler & Mama Ruby kept us. Mama Ruby worked at a woolen mill, she had to walk to work, the mill was several blocks thru bad part of town. But she wasn't afraid. She had a rabbit's foot and she whistled all the time. Gosh, Mama Ruby was a gutsy little woman. She was barley five feet tall, at that time her hair was still red. As I grew up Mama Ruby became my best friend. She was the person I was able to tell things to. I remember when I was in the hospital with pneumonia she brought me a big cloth doll. Gosh, that doll was bigger than I was. One day I heard loud voices, the nurses were trying to keep her from coming into the ward. Back then they kept pneumonia patients in a contagious ward, and visitors could only visit at a window. But Mama Ruby won, I remember that was one of the happiest hugs of my life. She came into the ward bringing that big old doll, almost as big as she was. She really loved me, and at that moment I really knew it. Also while I was in the hospital, Daddy had a wreck on his motorcycle. After that he didn't ride a motorcycle anymore. You know what, when Mama & Daddy got married they went to Jonesboro on the motorcycle even, after the war they had a big box like side car on it, and Judy & I rode in it. Grandaddy Winkler had a car. The only time they drove it was to church and to go to Austell. Back then people didn't jump into a car every time they went any place. I remember riding the street cars to town. Street cars were train like cars that ran on tracks & had long antenna type things on top, which hooked to electric wires, they were powered by electricity, they were just like "Trolly" on Mr. Rogers. When we would go to town, most of the time it was Mama, Aunt Ruth, Judy, & I went. We would pretend Judy was Aunt Ruth's little girl, because Judy and Aunt Ruth both have brown eyes. It was a game we enjoyed and giggled about. Aunt Ruth & Uncle Hoyal didn't have children, so they cared for Judy & I a lot. They tended to spoil us some. Their room had a fireplace which still worked, all the others in the house were closed up. I remember they had a big fluffy rug in front of the fireplace, & Judy & I would lay on that rug & visit and listen to country music on the radio. We would sing along when Hank Williams sang 'Hey good looking what ya got cookin, hows about cookin something up with me". In the summertime they would have a table on the front porch & play cards and listen to the ball games. That is all she wrote. I would have loved to read more about her life. I never knew her nor her daughter.
