Gerrit and his wife Bertha left the Netherlands with their 4 children and came to the USA in 1891. Later that same year their last child was born.
In 1902 they were listed in the Grand Rapids directory as living at 339 S. Lane Ave. in GR.

Bertha died in 1926 and Gerrit married again at age 67 in 1930. His second wife Elizabeth was loved by everyone and was heartbroken when Gerrit died 11 years later. My mother Millie recalls seeing her at the casket weeping and saying, "Oh pa, why did you have to go and leave me?"

Gerrit worked as a laborer at the Tanglefoot Fly Paper company.
