California pioneer. Nathaniel Lafayette Drew was born in New Hampshire. As a young man, he moved to Vermont, and later to Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked as a carpenter. The gold strike in California brought Nathaniel to California via Cape Horn where he arrived in San Francisco in November in 1849, moving on to Sacramento in January of 1850. He was first a builder, and later a lumber businessman with a store on Front Street (N.L. Drew and Company). As a teenager he he married Sarah Bates in 1841. Sarah died in 1852; the following year, Nathaniel married Charlotte A. Loveridge. They had two daughters (Mrs. Mary E. Denton and Minnie Drew). He held many offices in Sacramento, including County Supervisor and member of the State Board of Agriculture.
