Bob was the son of James Alexander Long and Katherine Seigler, and some of his siblings were Sallie, Magnola, Maud, Frances, James, George, Charley and Thomas.

On June 5, 1904 in Polk Co., TN Bob married Chloe Clayton, daughter of William and Rebecca Clayton and they were parents of Dottie, Bessie, Lennie, Ethel and Robbie.

According to an article in the Polk News, Bob was in an altercation with a Rymer when Harris Arthur tried to break them apart. Arthur told the Grand Jury that Bob pulled a knife on him and Bob died as a result of injuries to his head in the ensuing fight.
