As a baby, Fred suffered from some kind of disease, and the family thought he had died. My mother told me, they were at the gravesite to bury Fred, when his Aunt said he’s not dead. His Aunt placed a mirror over his mouth, and they saw steam forming on the mirror. Martha had only one sister, Elizabeth “Lizzie”, whom I believe was this aunt. This ailment Fred suffered left him crippled. He could walk, but not standing straight up. In his elderly years, Fred was confined to a wheel chair. After his mother’s death, his sister Nita took care of him, a promise she made to her mother before her death. In Nita’s elderly years when Nita found it difficult to care for Fred, Fred was put in a nursing home. .
