PHILIP HOFFMAN, SR., born 1789, Baden, Hessendarmstadt, Germany. Ran away when twelve years old and came to America to escape conscription. He had a Gerwan Gilder, or eight-seven cents. He hid in the ship, but was discovered when three days out to sea.
He was apprenticed to a baker in New York City for threeyears, escaped in one year and went west; married in Knoxville, Tenn., and settled in NeWport, Campbell County, Kentucky.
He was a builder, sold or rented his houses as his will shows, which was probated at Newport, May, 1865. One house on Fifth Street rented for twenty dollars a month, a good rent in those days; twenty dollars rented a good house even in 1900.
He died in Newport, Kentucky, and is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio.
He married Mary Wyatt Golder, born in Denwood County, Virginia, according to Secretary, cemetery Association. Her grand son says Petersburg, which is in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, the records of which were all burned in the Civil War.
She was born November 10, 1787; died January 23,
1875; buried in Greenlawn Cemetary, Milford, Clermont Co., Ohio.
