After many years of living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Phyllis passed away peacefully at her home in Ames, IA at the age of 69 on Friday, June 11th at 8:22 a.m. Phyllis was born to the late George Dewey Corbin and Julia Anna Corbin, formerly Niehaus, in Des Moines, where she would later raise a devoted family of her own. This family includes her children; Julie Saffeels (Dale), Daniel Jones, Jr. (Pamela), Wanona O'Reilly (Scott), Monte Jones (Donna) and Kimberly Glenn (Tim), her nine treasured grandchildren; Dale, Daniel and Kassidy Saffeels, Heather Macke, Stacy Jones, Katherine O'Reilly, Tory and Kelsey Jones, and Breeana Jones Glenn and her eleven precious great-grandchildren. Phyllis will forever be lovingly remembered by her surviving sisters and brothers Lorraine Lewis, Shirley Lewis, Marilyn Schultz, Roy and Donald Corbin and by those siblings who preceded her in death Walter, George, Norman, and Gerald Corbin. Phyllis loved many things in life—family and friends, animals, nature, movies and music just to name a few. When she wasn't busy raising five children, helping to raise grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and working hard to support her family, she spent time hunting with her dad, ice-skating, fishing, camping, exploring land and water—looking for special rocks and fossils, going for walks, watching movies and listening to music. And later in life, she also enjoyed attending the play productions of Kim and Breeana. She had a wide range of musical tastes and she immensely enjoyed listening to music created by her children and grandchildren—she was so proud of them, proud of all her family. Phyllis' family would like to thank Iowa Hospice for the love and support they provided to her and to her family—which lovingly cared for her in her last months at home. They would also like to thank Hamilton's Funeral Home for helping to make the final arrangements as painless as possible. Phyllis and her family have suffered a great deal from her illness and they would like you to know that COPD is a leading cause of death and illness worldwide and mostly caused by long-term smoking that can be prevented by not smoking or quitting soon after you start. Friends and family are invited to attend Phyllis' memorial service at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 25th, at the Lotus Moments Events Center, 2134 E. Grand Ave., D.M. The memorial service will be followed by a dinner reception where guests are invited to bring a dish to share. Friends and family are also encouraged to submit personal stories about Phyllis or to bring the stories with them to the memorial to share. Flower arrangements can be sent to 1631 E. Aurora Ave., D.M., IA 50313.
