It seems it was Joseph, Sr.'s second son Joseph, who survived to adulthood, that served in the Revolution and was commissioned as a veteran in the ranks to an officer as Ensign in the 2nd Connecticut Regiment on Jan. 1, 1776. He was advanced to lieutenant on 25 Dec. 25, 1777, and later discharged July 1, 1778 from the 8th Co., 2nd Battalion, 2nd CT Reg. It might have been during this service that he met Joshua Briggs who also served in the 2nd Connecticut at this time, and through Joseph perhaps Joshua met future wife, Tryphena.
