Joseph was the son of Capt. Richard Austin and Dorothy Adams. He was born in Suffield, Hampshire, Massachusetts which became Suffield, Connecticut. He married Abigail Allen who might have been a distant cousin since Joseph's grandmother was Ann Allan (married to Richard Austin)

Married: Abigail Allen May 8, 1740 at Suffield.

- Caroline Austin (b. April 25, 1742, d. Nov. 20, 1823);
- Abigail Austin (b. Nov. 15, 1745);
- Lucy Austin (b. March, 15, 1747, d. June 6, 1820);
- Ruth Austin (b. Nov. 15, 1749);
- Joseph Austin (b. March 16, 1750, Dec. 8, 1753);
- Joseph Austin (b. Nov. 3, 1753, d. May 23, 1823);
- Benjamin Austin (b. June 19, 1756);
- Tryphena Austin (b. March 25, 1759, d. March 9, 1847, married Joshua Briggs - see link below);
- Laurena Austin (b. June 15, 1761);
- Olive Austin (b. March 12, 1764).

It seems it was Joseph, Sr.'s second son Joseph, who survived to adulthood, that served in the Revolution and was commissioned as a veteran in the ranks to an officer as Ensign in the 2nd Connecticut Regiment on Jan. 1, 1776. He was advanced to lieutenant on 25 Dec. 25, 1777, and later discharged July 1, 1778 from the 8th Co., 2nd Battalion, 2nd CT Reg. It might have been during this service that he met Joshua Briggs who also served in the 2nd Connecticut at this time, and through Joseph perhaps Joshua met future wife, Tryphena.
