Horace Raff (Roff), one of the early pioneers of Perry County, was born in Breckinridge County, Ky., May 6, 1814, and is the second son of family of twelve children born to the marriage of Charles Raff (Roff) and Edie Mallory, both of whom were natives of Delaware County, N.Y. In 1811 they came to Perry County and located near the river in Tobin Township. November 5, 1834 the father was accidentlly killed, and the mother died about five years later. Horace E. remained at home working on the farm until 1833, when he began flat-boating on the river, which he continued for about two years. May 7, 1835, he was united in marriage with Nancy Brough, a native of the county, after which they settled on land deed them by his father-in-law. In April, 1838, Mrs Raff died, and July 26 of the same year he married Mary Gregory, a native of Fayette County, Ky., by whom he is the father of six children, four of whom, Martha A. (wife of Lewis Connor), Francis L., Edward and George are living. He also reared Napoleion B. Sanders, whom he took into his family in 1861. Edward and Francis L. were in the army of the late Rebellion. The former was in active service for over four years, and the latter one year, having been discharged on account of disability from an accident received at Lebanon, Ky., Mr. Raff and his entire family are members of the Missonary Baptist Church.

Wednesday. 28 December 1898 issue, Moweaqua Call-Mail:
Wednesday last at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Martha Connor in this city, that venerable Mother in Israel Grandma Mary E Roff, was the victim of a paralytic stroke from which she died Christmas day about 3:30 o'clock in the afternoon. Death came to her quietly and sweetly, seemingly free from all suffering. Surrounded by her loved ones, the spirit took its heavenly flight, released as it were from all earthly care. The services were held from the Baptist Church yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev Jo. B Rogers officiated. Pallbearers were Jas E Gregory, John L Gregory, Frank Gregory, Scott Gregory, Wm Whitworth and Henry Marshall. Mrs. Mary Gregory Roff was born near Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky, on 8 October 1815. She died at Moweaqua, Shelby County, Illinois, on 25 December 1898, aged 83 years, 2 months and 17 days. The deceased moved with the family and settled near Tobinsport, Perry County, Indiana, in 1833. She was married to H E Roff on 26 July 1838. To this union were born six children, Martha A Roff, Francis L Roff, Edward Roff, Arthur H Roff, Amanda Roff (who died in infancy) and George W Roff. N B Sanders was an adopted child reared by the family. Of these, there are living, Mrs. Martha A Connor and Mr. George W Roff, Moweaqua, Illinois; Mr. Francis L Roff of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Mr. N B Sanders, Tobinsport, Indiana. Aunt Mary, as she was familiary known to us, joined the Baptist Church with her husband at Cloverport, Kentucky, just across the Ohio river from her Indiana home in September 1839. They resided together upon the old home place near Tobinsport almost 50 years. By a strange coincidence, the old house on the old homestead burned down on last Wednesday, the very day on which Aunt Mary suffered the fatal stroke of paralysis. Her husband preceded her to the better world on 5 February 1887 at the age of 73 years. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Ellen Carwile, Moweaqua, Illinois, and three brothers, Ed and Washington Gregory, Moweaqua, Illinois, and Mr. George Gregory of Cloverport, Kentucky. There were 26 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. She spent the last years of her life with her daughter, Mrs. Martha Connor and after moving to Illinois, united with Little Flock Baptist Church and afterward with the Moweaqua Baptist Church of which she continued as a consistent member until the time of her death Hers was a very busy life. She was faithful in the discharge of her Christian duty and ministers of the gospel ever found a welcome retreat in the hospitality of her home.
Card of Thanks: We desire to return our sincere thanks to the many friends who so tenderly and sympathetically assisted us in our hour of sad affliction. Geo W Roff and relatives.

We were very much grieved to hear of the death of our beloved old neighbor, Grandma Roff who lived by us long and was a neighbor of our people in Indiana years ago. Our sympathies to the family . (Yantisville news)
