A man of many trades. Shad ran the ferry from Tobinsport to Cloverport, Kentucky. He was also an agent for bee keepers and a trader. A inventor of a flour siffter that was never marketed. Also developed a steam evaporator to dry peaches. He was a flat boat pilot for many years, making several trips to New Orleans.
Shad was married three times. First to Willia Amanda Polk, the daughter of Thomas and Melvins 'Ryan' Polk, who was the mother of his five oldest children. They were married in Perry County on January 3, 1847. Willia died on September 5, 1859 leaving Shad with the five young children, Florence, Thomas Lawrence, Emma Amanda, Prentice and Woodford.
Second he married on March 5, 1861 to Rebecca Isabella Hendricks in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Rebecca past away in 1866 leaving Shad with two young children, Murry C. and Annie M.
Shad's third marriage was on September 27, 1866 in Christian County, Kentucky, to Susan Frances Allegre whose father was a southern planter at Cadiz, Kentucky.
Shad and Susan built their own large house boat and furnished it lavishly. They lived on the Ohio River and spent winters on Green River at Cadiz. After Susan died in 1900, he dismantled the boat and built a home in Tobinsport, where he died in 1909.
