He was born Nov. 3, 1916, in Clovis, N.M., and married Opal Hatch on Sept. 7, 1945. She died June 7, 1983. He later married Lucille Howard Pursley on June 17, 1984. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Slaton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2741. He had been a deputy U.S. Marshal in Sundown before moving to Slaton in 1945. He was the owner of Slaton Cab Co. and Bus Station in Slaton until his retirement in 1961.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Derell Payne and Kay Calvin Abare, both of Slaton, and Arthur Abare of Lubbock; a stepson, John Pursley of Tucson, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Marilyn Payne of Slaton and Carolyn Massey of Houston; a brother, Johnny of Slaton; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
