Chester L. Arthur, eldest son of W.D. and Louisa (Knudson) Arthur, was born July 5, 1882 near Fredericksburg, Iowa. At an early age he moved with his parents to Decatur County, and later to Wright County.
As a young man, Mr. Arthur came to Fayette County and resided near Randalia and Fayette. He moved to Oelwein about thiry years ago, and made his home here ever since.
Mr. Arthur was married to Eveah Elliott on July 5, 1940.
Most of his life was spent farming, but during his years in Oelwein he did painting and carpentry. He was also an ardent gardener and loved flowers. He continued with this work until last year when his health begain to fail.
Mr. Arthur died Sunday morning, March 1, 1970, at Fayette County Hospital.
He is survived by his wife; four brothers, Leonard of Oelwein, Raymond of Maynard, Ernest of Pine River, Minnesota, and Gaylen of Clarion; one sister, Marian, Mrs. Wayne Hoffman of Byron, Ill., a step-daughter, Mrs. Leon (Rose) Shepard of Elgin; a step-son, Gordon Elliott of Niles, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
Services were held Wednesday, March 4, 1970, at 2 p.m. at the Hintz Funeral Home. The Rev. Warren Paige officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein. Pallbearers were James Arthur, Jack Grant, Harry Arthur, Lyle Arthur, Earl Arthur and Darrel Arthur.
