GARLAND – Ernest George Abel, 93, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the Rocky Mountain Care Center in Clearfield.

Ernest was born in Brigham City, Utah on October 27, 1919 a son of Thomas Ammon and Frances Brooks Abel.

He lived in American Fork until age 12, and then moved to Elwood.

He graduated from Bear River High School in 1937 and attended Weber State College.

Ernest married Mary Westmoreland on June 7, 1941. They later were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. She passed away July 10, 1961. He later married Audrie Graser Eddy in June, 1963. On November 27, 2010 she left Ernest and this life.

Ernest was a member of the LDS Chruch and had served as Scout Master, High Priest Teacher, Sunday School President, Ward Clerk, and Temple Security Guard for the Logan Temple.

Ernest was a handyman who could fix anything; he worked on cars, enjoyed gardening, reading, hunting, and boating at Willard Bay. He was an expert mechanic, working as a foreman for several car dealerships, Thiokol Chemical Corporation, Harris Truck and Equipment, finally retiring from the Utah Idaho Sugar Company as the Tare and Sugar Content Superintendant.

Garland City became a big part of his life following retirement. He helped with various repairs and projects for the city, later serving for 16 years as a elected member of the Garland City Council.

Surviving are his children: Edward (Bonnie) Abel, Orem, UT; Laurence (Nanette) Abel, Clearfield, UT; Rayma (Mike) Petracek, Ogden, UT; Joann Senninger, Clearfield, UT; Julie (Larry) Booker, Clinton, UT; 24 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Also siblings: Roy Abel, Tremonton, UT; Edith Conger, Brigham City, UT; Jean (Ed) Hansen, Ogden, UT; Ralph (Janet) Abel, Kaysville, UT; Kenny (Becky) Abel, VA.

Preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, wife Audrie, brothers: John, Jim and Fred, sisters: Erma and Francis, daughter Sandra, and stepson Michael.

Funeral services will be Monday, January 14, 2013 at 12 Noon at Myers Mortuary Chapel, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City, UT.

Friends may call on Monday from 10:00 to 11:40 a.m. at the Mortuary.

Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery Tremonton.
