Martha was one of ten children born to Robert L. Ash and Mary Elvira Davis Ash.

The other children were: Margaret Anna, William Davis, Sarah Permelia, Mary Adeline, Georgia Ann, Lyman Sylvester, John Lee, Robert Milton and Franklin D. Ash.

She was the spouse of Walter Rawleigh Harris.

They were married February 7, 1883 in Lawrence County, Alabama and had two children, Thomas A. and Mary F. Harris.
