Brooks entered the U.S. Army on 25 May 1918, and honorably served with Company 1, 324th Infantry, 156 Depot Brigade. The unit saw battle in the Arogonne Forest. He was discharged on 25 Jun 1919.

His obituary in the Greensboro Record (NC), dated November 16, 1946, relates that he died of an apparent heart attack during the night. He had lived in Greensboro the last 16 years and, at time of death, operated a Cafe. He was survived by his wife; three sisters, Mary (Wallace) of Pomona, Ruth (Bulley) of Kensington, Mrs Claude Coffey of Anderson, S.C.; four brothers, Bass, Ben, Joe and Sleigh (sic), all of Anderson.
