Berniece Dartt, 88, of Carmi died Monday, August 14, 2006, at her home.
She was born September 7, 1917, on the family farm in Bt. Prairie Township, the daughter of Ed and Karolena (Kallenbach) Winter. She married Howard Vernon Dartt, June 2, 1946, and he preceded her in death in September, 1990. After graduating from Carmi Township High School, Berniece pursued a career in elementary education. She attended SIU where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She began her 39 year teaching career at Moccasin and then at Bootjack schools before moving into the Carmi school district where she taught at Washington and Jefferson schools. At her retirement she was voted "Teacher of the Year." Berniece was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and the White Co. Retired Teacher's Association.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Greg Walters of Champaign, IL, and a son and daughter-in-law, John Pat and Sharon Dartt of Carmi; four grandchildren, Lauren and Tyler Walters of Champaign and Melissa and Justin Dartt of Carmi; a sister, Marie Mann of New Harmony, IN; three brothers and sisters-in- laws, Carl and Grace Winter, Edwin and Gladys Winter, Herman Winter, Dorothy Winter all of Carmi and Naomi Winter of Goshen, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lena McCormick; and three brothers, Chester, Leroy and Clarence Winter.
