He joined the military during the Civil War and died in Rolla, MO during a measles epidemic.
"U.S. Registers of Deaths of Volunteers 1861 - 1865". Says he died in Regimental Hospital January 3, 1862, was a Private Missouri Company C, 24th Missouri Volunteers. The actual page says - Bateman, Joseph, private, company C, January 3, 1862, Regimental Hospital, of Rubeola (which is measles)
There were several who died during this outbreak and records seem to indicate that they may have been buried in a common grave, then later moved. In 1869 the remains of 10,200 soldiers were moved from various location (including Rolla) to Jefferson Barracks Cemetery south of St. Louis. This is probably where Joe's remains ended up.
