This couple is often confused with Rachel Pitzer (Dawson) and her second marriage to Jonas Poling - who was a cousin of John Poling.

The first record of John Poling was his marriage to Mary (Polly) Pitzer, daughter of John Pitzer, on February 14, 1814.

In 1815 the tax book of Randolph County, Va. lists Peter Poling, Martin and John for 500 acres of land on the waters of Teters Creek. Since no deed was recorded for this property the assessor made a note in his books "They live there."

The 1820 census of Randolph Country, Virginia lists John's family as follows: 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26.

John Poling, is known to have "lived in Randolph County, Virginia, Guernsey County, Ohio and Brown County, Indiana."

John and Mary Polly had the following children:
