MATTOON — John Edward Hensley, age 78, of Mattoon, IL, passed away at 9:35 a.m., Monday, January 7, 2013, in Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral service in his honor will begin at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 10, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, IL. Pastor Troy Countryman will officiate. Interment will be in Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, IL. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 9 in Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938

John was born on September 22, 1934 in Gila, Illinois, the son of George and Elsie (Larson) Hensley. He married Pam Epperson on August 1, 1986. She survives.

Along with his loving wife, John is survived by their children: Kim Carr, and her husband Steve, of Hidalgo, IL; Cheryl Sowers, of Mattoon, IL; Angie Delgadillo, and her husband Frank, of Mattoon, IL, Randy Darkow, of Mattoon, IL; Three brothers: George Hensley, and his wife, Joyce, of Mattoon, IL; Norman Hensley of Mattoon, IL; Jim Hensley, and his wife Susan, of Indiana; Five sisters: Mildred Homann, and her husband Gerald, of Mattoon, IL, Fern Calhoun, and her husband John, of Charleston, IL; Linda Ingram, and her husband Junior, of Neoga, IL; Beverly Whitlock, and her husband John, of Charleston, IL; Peggy Coleman of Mattoon, IL; Four Grandchildren: Aaron Patrick, and his wife Dana, of Houston, TX; Ashley Patrick, and her husband Rick Giordano, of Charleston, IL; Tristan Delgadillo of Mattoon, IL; and Mariah Delgadillo of Mattoon, IL; Two Great-Grandchildren: Landon Patrick and Kole Patrick.

John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Mr. Hensley was a United States Army Veteran. He enjoyed working as a Police Officer at Eastern Illinois University. After his retirement in 1985, he worked as a custodian for Mattoon and Neoga School Districts. Also, John worked as a crop adjuster for Farmer's Mutual Hail Adjusters of Iowa. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Mattoon, and he belonged to both the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and the American Legion Post 88, of Mattoon.
