Marjorie Olson Eaton, 85, departed peacefully, early Wednesday morning, November 14, 2012, at her home in Lincoln, Nebraska. Born in Omaha on Sunday, January 30, 1927, Marjorie grew up in Lisco, Nebraska along the Platte River in the beautiful sandhills, with her parents, Helen and Harold Olson, brothers, Bill and Tom, and sister, Barb. Following graduation from Garden County High School, she enrolled in the University of Nebraska, majored in English, and joined the Alpha Phi sorority. In 1947 she was engaged and married to her high school sweetheart, Gene Eaton, who had returned from World War II. Both graduated from the University of Nebraska the following year in 1948.
Marjorie accepted a teaching position at Valparaiso High School, teaching several classes in English and drama, and coaching the volleyball team. Gene began his life long banking career, the same year, with the National Bank of Commerce. In 1950 Marj and Gene started a family, and she began the most important part of her "career" as a devoted, loving, full time "Mom" to her five children: Stephen, William, Barbara, Jonathan and Susan. During this time she also remained active with Alpha Phi, the Junior League and other community organizations. Her Christian faith from childhood grew stronger throughout her life, as she was active with prayer groups, retreats, and regular attendance at Westminster Presbyterian and First Plymouth Church.
Marjorie cherished all of her family relations and her many friendships in Nebraska, Colorado and Arizona where Marj and Gene spent winters in Green Valley, Arizona, during their "golden" years. Her children all married, with families, provided Marjorie with 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Marjorie shared love and kindness to everyone she met. Her bright spirit still shines.
A celebration of Marjorie's life will commence at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 21st, at First Plymouth Church in Lincoln. Barb Smisek will officiate. Arrangements are by Ropers and Sons. Memorials to Tabitha Foundation and First Plymouth Church.
