John was the eldest son of Joseph and Elizabeth Toone Hardwick. He was married to M. Elizabeth abt 1833 in Lawrence County, Alabama. They had 6 children.

John was bitten by an animal and realized he had contracted rabies, had a room built with only an opening for food and water and stayed in the room during the course of the disease.

Children:
Joseph H. Hardwick born 1835 Tennessee married Frances J. Octavia Burks February 22, 1860 Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama. They moved to Perry County, Tenn were they lived until Joseph died in the 1870's. Fannie moved to Oklahoma with their children.

Samuel V. Hardwick b 1840 Alabama married Frances Phillips
November 19, 1863 Lauderdale County, Alabama. Sam died during the 1870's Fannie lived in Lauderdale County until her death 1923.

Benjamin F. Hardwick b 1844 Alabama, disappears from the census after 1870, no farther info has been found.
