William Bandstra was born March 13, 1917 southeast of Pella in Mahaska County, the third of six children born to Peter and Anna (Stursma) Bandstra.

Bill attended rural schools - Black Oak Center, Flintridge, and Pella Christian Grade School. Growing up Bill worked for several farmers, also for the Rural Electric Association digging post holes by hand for the poles that provided electricity to rural Pella families.

On February 5, 1940 Bill was united in marriage with Dirkie Vos at the home of her parents in Pella. Bill and Dirkie were blessed with five children: Larry Duane, Stanley Eugene, Marcella Jeanne, Peter William, and Sandra Ellen.

The family farmed in the Otley, Pella, and Harvey areas. Bill and Dirkie moved to Pella in 1972. As a young child Bill attended the Pella Second Christian Reformed Church with his parents and made profession of his faith at an early age. Except for being a member of the Otley Christian Reformed Church for six years, he remained a faithful member of the Pella Second Christian Reformed Church, where he served several terms as Elder. Bill and Dirkie were custodians at the church for several years before retiring.

Bill passed away on Friday morning, November 28, 2008 at the Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa, at the age of ninety-one.

Bill is survived by his wife, Dirkie, and their children and spouses: Larry and Linda Bandstra of rural Harvey, Iowa, Marcie and Gerrit Vander Beek of Pella, Sandi and Bryce Bruxvoort of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren: Lori and Paul Iverson, Rick and Leora Bandstra, Dan Vander Beek, Cheryl and Steve Gosselink, Tom and Heather Bandstra, Becki and Chad Ford; eight great-grandchildren: Luke and Rachel Iverson, Lindsey Jansen, Laci, Tyler and Brianna Gosselink, Mason and Morgan Ford. Also surviving: one sister, Gertrude and her husband Henry Vande Voort of Pella; one sister-in-law, Joyce (Gilbert) Bandstra of Pella; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his father on March 12, 1948 and his mother on January 15, 1953; two sons: Stanley Eugene on July 30, 1955 and Peter William (stillborn) on December 28, 1954; a sister and her husband, Tena and John Westercamp; three brothers and two sisters-in-law: Paul and Bertha Bandstra, Gilbert Bandstra, and Raymond andGrace Bandstra.
