Elmer was the son of Joseph and Mary Delauter Gordon, and the step-son of Margaret Fouche Gordon. He was the husband of Lavinia, who died in 1947. Elmer was survived by his children Faye Brown, Gladys Mowen, Esta Troupe, Mary King, Virginia Grossnickle, Chester, Earl and Lee Gordon, 22 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, sister Cora Carter and half-siblings May Ifert, Nellye Chaney, Hazel Wilhide, Clarence, J. Luther, Norman and Vernon Gordon.
Elmer was predeceased by son Harvey in 1896 and daughter Angie in 1917.
Elmer ran a store in Gapland was and had been the postmaster there. He was a member of the Brownsville Church of the Brethren.
