Preston was the son of John and Wilhelmina Redman Phillips and the husband of the former Lucinda Coulter, who survived him, along with their children Grace Younkins, Earl, Ruth Younkins, Raymond, Wilbur, Bessye Mullendore, Maude Potter, Preston N. and Evelyn, several grandchildren, mother-in-law Julia Gordon Coulter, and siblings William, John and Lorenza Phillips, Estella Davis and Louise Ahalt.
Preston was predeceased by baby daughter Edna in 1891.
Preston had been a cooper, had run a store and then went into the lumber business.
He was very active in the West Brownsville Church of the Brethren in Yarrowsburg. Before a church was built, the congregration often met at his home for worship. When a church was built in 1907, he donated lumber. He often led the church in singing hymns and other activities, and sometimes he taught classes there. He would do anything to help others.
Preston was very ill in his last months. He spent nearly two months at the hospital in Hagerstown but returned home to die. He passed away due to gangrene and blood poisoning in one of his feet.
