Ella Jean Raberding, daughter of Henry W. and Carrie E. (Galloway) Smith, was born on April 1, 1922 near Duquoin, Kansas. She passed away January 6, 2013 at Harper Hospital, at the age of 90 years and 9 months. Jean spent her childhood on the family farm and attended Old Duquoin Grade School.

While living and working on the farm, she met Maurice Raberding. She married him on December 24, 1948. To this union, three children were born; Cindy, Dan and Paul.

In her younger years, Jean worked in various retail stores in downtown Harper before beginning a career as a Nurses Aide at the Harper Hospital, where she was employed for eleven years.

She was active in her church and community where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She served as a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She was also a member of the Harper County Genealogical Society, The Harper Historical Society, and the Harper Art Association. Her love for family lead to extensive research in both the Galloway and Raberding families.

She carried the skills she learned as a youth in 4-H throughout her life, sewing for family and friends. When she retired her interest in sewing became a hobby and expanded to quilting, embroidery, weaving, and crocheting. She also enjoyed tole painting and was an avid reader.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Henry & Carrie Smith; husband of 50 years, Maurice; brother Irvin Smith; sister Velma White and granddaughter Traci Misak.

She will be deeply missed by her children, Lucinda "Cindy" Coyne and husband Tom of Licking, Missouri, Daniel Raberding and wife Sue, and Paul Raberding both of Harper, Kansas; grandchildren, Heath Coyne and wife Kim, and Lori Volkman and husband Patrick; great-grandchildren, Cortney Coyne, Micheal Volkman, Ethan Volkman, and Tatum Henke and a host of other relatives and friends.
