The area today that is known as McAdenville was once called Henderson Shoals named after its owner James Henderson. In the late 1700s, the land was sold to Adam Alexander Springs (1776-1840) of Providence Township, Mecklenburg County, NC, and the area became known as Spring Shoals.

Adam Springs graduated with honors in the first graduating class of the University of North Carolina, July 10, 1798, at the age of 22. Related to the same Springs family of present day Springs Mills, Adam Springs farmed cotton and amassed other land in present day Charlotte, Mount Holly and Lincoln County. As his last wish, he is buried on a hilltop overlooking the shoals of the South Fork River. Rumor has it he is buried standing up, with a musket in his hand. To many in the area, there is a legend that a man can be seen with a lantern watching over his fish traps below in the river.
