Major League Baseball Player. Born in West Lebanon, New Hampshire, he was a third baseman making his debut for the Buffalo Bisons on July 5, 1880. For seventeen seasons, he played with the Buffalo Bisons (1880), St. Louis Browns (1883-89, 1896), Chicago Pirates (1890), Cincinnati Reds (1891-95), Washington Senators (1899) and New York Giants (1909). A colorful player, he was known for playing practical jokes and holds the Major League record for most errors by a third baseman with 822. However he was a good base stealer, leading the league in stolen bases with 109 in 1888 and ranks 8th on the all time list for stolen bases with 742. He concluded his career with a record of 1478 runs scored, 1836 hits, 27 home runs, 563 runs batted in and a .269 batting average. He died at age 92 in Garden City, New York.
