Obituary

Theodore David Matthews Sr. passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Bayshore Health Center.

Ted was born on February 6, 1922, in Duluth, to the late Ralph and Emma (Wangen) Matthews. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1940.

Ted married Leone Holtslander in Little Falls, MN in June 1943. They made their home in various places, Duluth, Silver Bay, and Cloquet. They enjoyed spending their retirement winters in Bullhead City, AZ and their summers at Grand Lake.

Ted served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII serving in the European Theatre, entering France at Normandy on June 6, 1944. He served with the 1298th Military Police Company. After the war, he was employed at U.S. Steel Plant in Duluth prior to moving to Silver Bay in 1956 and working for Reserve Mining Company as a General Foreman of Maintenance. He served three terms on the Silver Bay Village Council and on the board of directors for the United Protestant Church. He was active in the VFW and American Legion and served on the Board of the IRRRB. Ted was an avid fisherman and hunter with many tales of his exploits. He enjoyed playing cards and giving $2 bills to children. But most importantly was the love of his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Leone; parents and brother, Ralph.

Ted is survived by his three children, Roberta (David) Cook of Duluth, Theodore Jr. (Cathy) Matthews of Hutchison, MN and Michael (Verna) Matthews of Bismarck, ND; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; as well as his sister, June Lindberg; sisters-in-law, Lila Steinbach and Elsie Matthews; and brother-in-law, Stanley Holtslander.

Ted's family would like to thank all who provided care and support through his journey especially the staff of Bayshore Health Center and Essentia Hospice as well as the extra TLC from family members David and Dana Cook and Marvin Steinbach.

A celebration of Theodore's life will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, June 18th at the Jarvi Dowd Funeral Home, 925 E. 4th Street, with a gathering time one hour prior.
