Harold was raised in LeGrand,Iowa. After graduating high school he served in the U.S. Army in WWII under General George Patton as a heavy tank driver and commander in the 2nd Armored Div. He served in both Africa and Europe and pariticipated in the Normandy, France landing in June 1944.

He was wounded in action Mar. 1945 and was decorated with the Purple Heart and Silver Star Medal. He returned to Iowa but later moved to Washington State and worked as a heavy equipment operator on many projects including the Grand Coulee Dam.
On June 13, 1953, he was united in marriage to Barbara June Spence. To this marriage two children were born; Duane Martin Cary b. Aug. 23, 1954 in Coeur d'Alene, ID , d. Aug. 13, 1979, and Cheryl Kaye Cary Adamson b. Sep. 13, 1955 Belle Fourche, SD.
He is survived by a sister, Juanita Marie Cary Himes of Marshalltown, Iowa.
