"The death of Mrs. Cornelia Mercer Smith Ashley, mother of Dr. Charles A. Ashley, director of the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital here, occurred suddenly on October 1 at her home in Bronxville. She was 79 years old. A native of Chicago, she spent most of her early years in Washington, D. C. She married Allen Ashley of Ruston, La. in 1916. He died in 1931. Mrs. Ashley had lived in Bronxville for more than 50 years. She had been an officer in the P-TA and of the Soroptomists of Bronxville. She operated a retail dress shop in Bronxville for more than 30 years. Surviving besides Dr. Ashley, are another son, Carleton Ashley of Bronxville, vice-president of the Denver Chemical Company in Stamford, Conn.; two sisters, Mrs. John Archer Gee of Bronxville, formerly of New Haven, Conn., and Mrs. Henry M. Zook of Poughkeepsie; a brother, L. Mercer Smith of Baltimore, president of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Maryland; and eight grandchildren ...
