Mary Eleanor Shoemaker was the daughter of Joseph A. and Mary E., nee Maxwell, Hill. Eleanor married John Earl Shoemaker of Charleston, Illinois and they had three children, Audley, Jack and William. They lived in Washington state until 1922 when her husband John was killed in what is known as "The Herrin Massacre", near Herrin, Illinois. Eleanor moved back to Georgia to live with relatives, but unfortunately she became ill and passed away on January 27, 1929 at the young age of 46. She is buried with members of her family in Summerville, Cemetery in Augusta. Her husband John E. Shoemaker is buried in Charleston, Illinois.
