"John and Fredonia Churchwell had six children: John H Churchwell of Cordele, A. F. Churchwell of Albany; Walter Churchwell of of Hawkinsville; Mrs. J. C. Hind of Columbus, Mrs. Dan Fletcher, of Harding, GA and Mrs. M. D. Calhoun of Bainbridge. The family lived in the Brookfield area of Tift County. Son John H. Churchwell began a mercantile business in McRae, Ga using only $100. He outgrew his place and moved to Cordele, Georgia, operating one of the most successful businesses in Georgia at the time. His brother, A. F., opened a similar store in 1897 in Abbeville and opened a Churchwells in Albany, Ga in 1900. By March of 1911, the Churchwell brothers had retail stores in Albany, Cordele, Waycross, Fitzgerald, Tifton and Sylvester and a wholesale distributorship in Cordele. Although their retail and wholesale business took them away from Tift County, the Churchwells were among the generous donors who contributed to the building of the memorial Brookfield Methodist church."
