Henry William Coit graduated in Law from Yale University, class of 1858.

He was wounded on the battlefield in Virginia, then sent to the home of Dr. Alexander Malloy of Cheraw for care, where he died. He was the first casualty of the Civil War in the Coit family, North and South. Others were lost later, including one brother killed in action and one brother seriously wounded at Chikamauga, then imprisoned. He never fully recovered.
