Elsie Mae Bolen was born October 2, 1906, the daughter of Robert Ely Baldwin and Lydia M. Meyer of Nekoma, Kansas. She died July 2, 2000 at the age of 93.

She was the youngest of seven children, three sisters, Dena, Nora and Vera, and three brothers, Tom, Ross and Bud.

After graduating from LaCrosse, Kansas High School, she attended summer school at Fort Hayes Teacher's College in Hayes, Kansas. Later she attended State Teacher's College in Greeley. She remarked following her graduation she thought she knew everything but it was like the young man that proclaimed, "Here I am world with my A.B." An older person sitting nearby said, "Sit down young man and I'll teach you the rest of the alphabet."

Following her graduation she taught school for eight years. On May 26, 1932 she married Lawrence Bolen and moved to the family farm two and one half miles south of Holyoke. She taught school after they were married.

On September 5, 1924, a son Lloyd was born. She then became a full time wife, mother and homemaker. But loving, busy Elsie took on many other tasks. She took care of her aged mother. She visited the sick and shut-ins. She was a familiar being at Prairie Vista Care Center and she served there wherever there were needs.

Elsie gave her heart to Jesus and was baptized in the Assembly of God Church. She proved her faithfulness by being at every service. She loved the young people and was always excited about their marriages and the birth of their children. She was a prayer warrior for the Church as well as the needs of the community.

Her great joy came when Lloyd married Betty and three grandchildren were born to this family, Randy, Mike and Susan.

She had great sorrows, too. On February 21, 1964, Lloyd passed away suddenly and a year later on September 14, 1965, Lawrence passed away. She then sold the family farm and bought a home in Holyoke where she resided until her health failed and she entered Prairie Vista Care Center.

She is survived by daughter-in-law Betty Griego and husband of Denver; grandson Randy and wife Sherry and children of Pamona, California, Mike and family of Denver; granddaghter, Susan Garcia and husband Robert of Denver; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Hazel Bolen of Greeley; a host of nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Elsie Bolen were held Thursday, July 6 at the Assembly of God Church. Final resting place is at Holyoke Memorial Park.
