Postwar President of Austria. Born the last of eighteen children in what was Unter-Tannowitz In Moravia. He left home at 14 and eventually studied law in Vienna, and became active in the Social Democratic Party. By the spring of 1896, he had received a doctor of law degree and obtained employment in the library of the Australian Parliament. In 1907, he was elected to Parliament. He was selected as provisional chancellor on October 30, 1918 and then permanently the following year. However during his ministries, he was unable to stop sizable territorial losses to Italy, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. He advocated Austrian entry into the League of Nations. He went on to serve as president of the Nationalrat from 1930 to 1933. In 1938 he supported Germany's annexation of Austria. After World War II, he worked with the occupying Soviet troops and Western allies to reestablish an independent government and became the first post war chancellor in April 1945. Later that same year, he was unanimously elected president. He published several works, most significant were "Staat und Nation" 1899 - (State and Nation) and a three volume set "Osterreichs Erneuerung" (Austrian Renewal) and his memoirs. He died while in office.
