John, "Jack" J. Graves, 88, formerly of Walla Walla and Milton-Freewater, died Dec. 23, 2012 in Molalla.
Jack was born June 3, 1924, in Enterprise, the son of William and Lena Goebel Graves. He grew up in Enterprise where he attended his schooling and graduated from Enterprise High School in 1942.
On May 27, 1943, he joined the United States Navy during World War II. He received the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal-7 Stars, Philippine Liberation Medal-2 Stars, American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
After his discharge from the Navy on Feb. 23, 1946 he returned home. He attended Benke-Walker Business College in Portland for two years.
On June 3, 1946, he married Phyllis Kruse in Pendleton. The couple lived in Portland where he was doing job training and then he went to work for Standard Stations in 1947. He worked for them in The Dalles, Hood River and Forest Grove until opening his own Chevron Station in Cedar Hills in 1958.
He operated the station until the family moved to Walla Walla in 1963. Jack operated his own business as an accountant and in business management. He retired in 1981, helping the new owners for 4-5 years. He and his wife moved to Milton-Freewater in 2006.
He treasured his family, his friends, his home and was an avid Notre Dame football fan. He enjoyed golf, crossword puzzles and sports.
He was preceded in death by his wife on March 16, 2011, and son Brian Graves in April 2011.
Survivors include three sons, John Graves of Colton, Mike Graves of Cul-de-Sac, Idaho and Ronald Graves of Portland; two daughters, Sue Graves of Newberg, and Mary Ellen Jeffers of North Bend, 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, in the chapel of the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St, Milton-Freewater.
Funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Walla Walla.
Following the Mass there will be a light lunch for family and friends in the church fellowship hall of the church. Private entombment will take place prior to Mass at the Mt. View Cemetery.
Contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Christian Aid Center through the funeral home.
