DEATH, THOS. BRADY, ONE OF FOUNDERS ST. MARY'S CHURCH, IS MOURNED HERE
Thomas J Brady, private citizen of Akron, lies at rest today in St. Vincent's cemetery. "Tom" Brady died last Tuesday at his home, 407 Wabash ave. Seldom has the death of a private citizen been more universally mourned and seldom has such honor been given a man at his death as to have two of his sons officiate at the services for the repose of his soul.
Hundred's of citizens of Akron passed by the body of the aged resident as it lay on the bier at his home and several thousand more crowded St. Mary's church for the last services Friday morning.
And Tom Brady's life wish was granted. On the altar signing the requiem high mass for the dead was Father Cletus Brady, his son, and acting as deacon of the mass was another son, Father Bernard Brady.
His funereal was one of the largest ever held for a private citizen. The big auditorium of St. Mary's Catholic church was packed with mourners. Nearly a dozen assisted at the services.
WELL KNOWN IN CITY
Mr. Brady was one of the best known citizens in Akron and he was especially well known among the older residents.
He was 82 years old when he died and lived in Akron nearly 50 years. He was engaged in the contracting business nearly all the time he lived here. He also had served in city council three terms. He was widely known, too, for his activities in connection with the efforts made to obtain freedom for Ireland, the land of his birth.
Mr. Brady had a checkered career full of thrilling incidents. When but 8 years old he moved with his parents to Canada. He came to Akron late in the seventies.
The cause of his native land was so strong in him that he returned twice to take up arms to fight for Ireland's liberty.
BEATEN BY BRITISH
When but a boy at the close of the Civil war he sailed with a group of 16 other patriots and fought until the Irish forces were defeated by the British. He returned a few years later and served in the Irish ranks for 6 months.
He kept up his interest in Ireland's affairs until his death and during the remaining years of his life promoted in every way possible the efforts of the Irish leaders to obtain recognition from England.
Mr. Brady's only venture in politics was as councilman and he served the old fourth ward for three terms as a member of the councilman body enjoying a wide reputation for his capabilities his honesty of purpose.
FOUNDER OF CHURCH
He was also one of the founders of St. Mary's church and one of the original K. of C. and C. M. B. A. members in Summit county.
Two of Mr. Brady's sons became priests, members of the Passionist order. A daughter became a nun Sister Mary Cletus of St. Joseph's order. She died a little over a year ago.
He leaves three sons in Akron; John J., Thomas J., and Emmett, and tree daughters; Mrs. Boyd Brobst, Mrs. James Fitzharris, and Mrs. John Conroy, and one sister Mrs. Mary McGrory of Ontario, Can.
