EARLIMART, Tulare Co. - Deputy sheriffs are looking for two men who killed Charles Vernon Gibson, 67, owner and operator of Gibson's Liquor Store at 794 State St., Earlimart, during an apparent holdup attempt about 10:45 o'clock Saturday night.
Gibson died from a fatal shot into his chest from a 45-caliber gun. He also was hit in his left arm.
A witness, whom deputies will not identify, told of seeing two men enter the store and a struggle broke out. Four to five shots were fired before Gibson dropped to the floor behind the counter.
The officers believe Gibson may have wounded one of the bandits. The witness said after the shooting the pair ran to a car and drove off. Robbery was the apparent motive but no money was taken, according to Lt. Mitchell Vidak of the Pixley sheriff's substation. Also investigating are Sgts. Larry Watkins and Ike Day.
Gibson, a retired police officer from New York State, was the father-in-law of Deputy Sheriff Sam Pearson of Earlimart. He was a native of Big Spring, Tex.
He is survived by his widow, Hallie; three sons, Charles Jr., of Roswell, N.M., and Joe and Lee of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. Bobbie Pearson of Earlimart, Mrs. Lillian Rider of Norman, Okla., and Mrs. Leaontine Forace of San Jose and a brother, Clyde of Alexandria, Va.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Earlimart Veterans Memorial Building. Burial will be in a Porterville Cemetery. The Goble Chapel in Tulare is in charge of arrangements."
